I’m always blown away at how I have the privilege of being invited into someone’s most sacred moments where I get to hear the heartbeat of my client’s desires – sometimes these desires are hidden and need to be explored. I love exploring and diving in deeper with my clients, I’m one who has learned to become very curious in this life and I want to really know my family, clients, and friends. Ultimately we all want to be seen and heard, right? To be known.
It was one afternoon when Kayla contacted me about doing a maternity lifestyle shoot for her and Adam and she was excited to welcome not one – but twins into this amazing world. This was not my first session with this beautiful family.
Through our discovery session I had learned the hard truth that she has miscarried twice and now was carrying twins – what a beautiful gift. These were rainbow babies getting ready to make their debut into this growing family! What I also discovered is that Kayla wanted an image that honored her two lost babies and desired to have a finished image that somehow creatively included her lost babies and a rainbow. She shared that she didn’t know what that actually meant – but trusted me to create something beautiful.
I had a lot of thoughts but it wasn’t until we were at the location that I couldn’t even imagine what this would look like for them, but I trust the creativity inside of me to create something truly special for them. As we started photographing the family, an idea came to my mind and I captured a simple image of her where the water was still, a lone island behind and a tree in the background – trees and water represent life and this one image was starting to come together. I posed Kayla and we both breathed into this moment of serenity. In the week to follow I started to work on the final piece of art. It was in the creative process that realized a special artistic flavor was needed to bring this image to life in a way that truly touched Kayla and Adam. I added layers of Photoshop techniques including two simple tears in the image representing the loss of her two unborn children, softly emphasizing her belly with the life of her two sons about to enter this world and a rainbow subtly bringing it all together. It is a masterpiece that is now adorning the walls in their home.
What a gift to be able to create something that will carry on for generations to come. I find it a sacred privilege to be invited into those moments and the trust that my clients have in me fills my soul.
